TOPIC: GOD, YOU AND YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM

    TEXT: Isaiah 38:2-3 KJV
Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and prayed unto the Lord , [3] And said, Remember now, O Lord , I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore.

You And Your Relationship With God

A relationship with God starts from His amazing love and grace reaching out to us. It’s always been the desire of God to reveal Himself to us since creation. Our relationship with God therefore begins the moment we accept Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Saviour

Until We're Saved, We're Dead In Sin

    Ephesians 2:1 KJV
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.

    Romans 5:12 KJV
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.

    Jesus Christ came to do what we could not do for ourselves;

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16).

So you can begin your personal relationship with God by putting your faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord.

That is the foundation of your relationship with God; the very foundation on which every other thing I'll be saying here will be built.

You may find it helpful to express your new faith in words similar to these:

Dear God, I know that my sin has separated me from You. Thank You for sending Your Son to die in my place. I now trust Jesus to forgive my sins. I invite Him into my life as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for receiving me into Your eternal family. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

If there is anything many Christians in our days and times have so much abused, taken for granted and toyed with, it's their relationship with God.

Why has it become so easy for Christians to value their relationships with their boyfriends, girlfriends and spouse more than their relationship with God?

Why is it easy for Christians to cry over their relationships with their boyfriend/girlfriends/spouse if they lose it but care less about the state of their relationship with God?

One of the major reasons why the Church is lacking greater works and impact in our present day Christianity is due to the fact that many Christians are playing with their relationship with God.

Asides the fact that many are faking being a Christian, many who are truly Christians don't give in much efforts towards working on their relationship with God.

    What is happening, Christians?

Many are satisfied with getting saved, going to church and having a job. To them, that's living a fulfilled life.

Many are satisfied with having their daily material needs met. So long they have their daily bread; have new clothes and shoes to wear; to them that's a fulfilled life.

Many are pursuing a relationship with the opposite sex, but not many are pursuing a relationship with God

There's this saying: Pursue a relationship with God, He'll give you the one for you at the right time.

We cannot continue having our priorities misplaced!

I can conclude that the Lack of desire to pursue a relationship with God is the evidence of lack of genuine love from the heart for God and the things of God.

Even the zeal for the work of God emanates from our love for Him.

Why should we love mundane thing more than God?

Come to think of it...He is the air we breathe; the very life we live.

Jesus Christ is the Creator God, He sustains everything and keeps them alive and in motion within the palms of His hands.

What if He stops sustaining us at any hour? It would be too late to seek Him.

God doesn't ask for much, He asks to be loved. He first loved us. Let's kill the mindset that tells us that God doesn't desire to be loved in return. The Lord doesn't only want to love but to be loved in return!

Let's understand that God doesn't exist for man but man exists for God. We were created for His pleasure. God doesn't exist to chase after man. Man exists to chase after God.

But why is it that some Christians only come to have their needs met by God, and that's all, not for relationship? And if God refuses to meet their long list of needs according to their specifications, they fall away so easily and look for other means. We need sober reflection!

Christianity is not a religion. The true meaning of Christianity is having a relationship with the Father through the Son, Jesus Christ... on a personal level. It's a personal race. God needs you in person. He yearns for a relationship with you in person, and not just any kind relationship but an intimate relationship.

Do you have an intimate relationship with God? Is the present state of your relationship with God up to the level you can term it as 'intimate'?

Unfortunately, many come to God to seek His hand, not His heart.

We need to revisit the foundation on which our personal Christian life stands to ascertain whether it's genuine or not, solid or shaky.

Until we seek a relationship; an intimate one, with our Creator, I must confess, we haven't lived up to the purpose for our existence!

Man was created for relationship with his Creator. Before their fall, there was this extraordinarily close affinity that existed between Adam and Eve with God. That is what man was created for. We were never created to live a life so self-centered and disconnected from God

How many times do we hear God per day? That was a normal routine for Adam and Eve; it was a relationship with constant communication. That's how it's meant to be with everyone who says they're God's.

IMPROVING OR BUILDING A BETTER RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

Now that you've heard and have possibly spotted where you've slacked in your relationship with God, can you improve your relationship with God? The answer is definitely Yes!

Let’s turn for help to the seventeenth-century Puritan John Owen. In his classic writing, "Communion with God", Owen says:

Our communion with God consists in his communication of himself to us, with our return to him of that which he requires and accepts, flowing from that union which in Jesus Christ we have with him. (Works, Vol. 2, 8–9, modernized).

Here, Owen makes distinction between “union” and “communion.”

In the gospel, through faith, we have union with God in Christ.

From start to finish this union is God’s gracious work toward us. But this union leads to **communion** with God — a genuine, two-way relationship of give-and-take in which our involvement matters.

So we can go ahead and split our relationship with God into two parts:

    1. The Union With God.

    2. The Communion with God.

    1. The Union With God: This is the basis of our relationship with God. It is the foundation of our relationship with Him. A union with God is initiated once we get saved. We can't improve on our union with God. It's God's work. When we were yet sinners, God sent His Son to die for us, so that we can be reconciled back to Him. We're saved by Grace, not works. That's union and we have no work to do there.

When we sin we can always fall back to our union with God, the foundation of our relationship with Him and expect Him to catch us. Union is like Level one of man's relationship with God.

    2. The Communion with God: We can improve on our communion with God. This is the same place where our emphasis lies pertaining to the theme of the conference.

In communion, we seek to ascended from level one of our relationship with God unto other levels. In Communion there is a real giving and receiving. There is loving and being loved.

If we spend quality time with God each day, communing with Him, you're bound to receive something in return and ascend to higher levels in the ladder of man's relationship with Him. If we don't, we remain in level one (union).

    2 Corinthians 3:18 KJV
But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Under communion, what we do makes a real difference in our experience of our relationship with God.

Under communion, if one were to be in level 3 of their relationship with God, one careless sin can send one back to level 1 (union). Yes, God won't forsake but you're back to level one in your relationship with Him

I don't know if someone here is getting me.

Now... the truth is that many Christians are stagnated Perpetually in level 1 (union).

They sin and cry... asks God for forgiveness... God forgives... they try ascending off level one again... then they disobey God again and think, "Well, He always forgives". He will forgive, but you're still stuck in level one.

That is why many Christians are operating below par. They're operating below the level God destined them to because:

    * They've not yet submitted their self-will to God
    * They're still struggling with secret sins
    * They still love specific sins, to the level they're not yet ready to give it up for greater glory
    * They've not yet Crucified their flesh
    * They've not yet Crucified their Self

They're stuck in a kind of circle of rebelling against God, asking for forgiveness and rebelling again. No one ever builds an intimate relationship with God this way.

There are levels within levels of relationship with God that man can attain. Had it been we could grasp this simple logiv with our finite minds, we would understand that nothing is worth denying us the ascension to greater levels in Him.

Besetting sins are a distraction to those who don't know what they'll gain by letting go of them

When I remember people like Moses, am always thrilled. God loves us all but God has favorites. There's is more to remaining at level one relationship with God. Those who want to remain in level one are still in the outer courts.

There is a place...It is called The Secret Place, and Very few Christians are there. God's favorites are there. Moses was there. That is the place of intimate relationship with God.

It takes denying oneself and the pleasures of this world and desires of the flesh to get there. It takes total submission and obedience to God to get there. Only completely yielded vessels are there.

    Psalm 25:14 KJV
The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.

The secret of the Lord is not with everyone. That is why every Christian doesn't operate within the same level. One can't operate beyond the level of Revelation God grants them and the level of His Glory they possess and reflect.

    Numbers 12:6-8 KJV
And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream. [7] My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house. [8] With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the Lord shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?

Why did God give such preference and special treat to Moses? The answer is simple: intimate relationship.

    Numbers 12:7 KJV
My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house.

The LORD says, "Come up hither". There is more.

Don't just be satisfied with getting saved and making Heaven.

    There is more.

How much impact are we personally making on Earth as a Christian?

No Christian can impact the world beyond their level of relationship with God.

The quality of the relationship we have with God is our source.

People are seeking strange powers to manifest impact, signs and wonders in ministry because they don't want to humble themselves and seek God's face. They don't want to pay the price. That is not the will of God for your life. You were created to love Him; to know Him. Once you there, He'll manifest His life & power through you. You'll only be a conduit of His Voice and Power

    Make no mistake about this:

Christian perfection isn't human perfection. God's purpose is to make us one with Himself. Christian perfection is the perfection of a relationship with God that shows itself to be true even amid the seemingly unimportant aspects of human life.

CAN YOUR current relationship with GOD COMPEL HIM TO MOVE ON YOUR BEHALF ON THE BASIS OF the QUALITY OF THAT SAME RELATIONSHIP?

    Can you boldly tell God,

"Oh Lord, out of the relationship I have with you, intervene in this situation!" and that moves Him into action? Think about it.

Let's connect back to the Scripture of the theme:

    Isaiah 38:1-5 KJV
In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came unto him, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord , Set thine house in order: for thou shalt die, and not live. [2] Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and prayed unto the Lord , [3] And said, Remember now, O Lord , I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore. [4] Then came the word of the Lord to Isaiah, saying, [5] Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith the Lord , the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years.

If you go through 2 Kings, you'll see the story about the life and times of Hezekiah.

Hezekiah was one of the most obedient Kings to rule Judah. He did what was pleasing to the Lord all through. He destroyed idols and alters that were made to other gods. His relationship with the Lord was rock-solid.

God has given you the assignment to destroy the demonic alters in your family, yet your own life is not even yet in total submission to Him...

Am I speaking to someone here? That relationship with God is shaky.

A message then came to Hezekiah... "Hezekiah, it's your time to die"

And what was his response? Hezekiah wasn't just reminding God the things he did for God... that would be too shallow.

He spoke on the basis of the relationship he had with the Lord and God couldn't resist it. He added more 15yrs to him. Can we speak that same way?

Is our current relationship with God up to the level we can speak that way & it compels God to move on our behalf?

God is looking for hungry, thirsty people. People who are tired of average Christian life which almost everyone is living.

Hezekiah said he walked before God in truth and with a perfect heart. That was a man like us. Can we personally say that to God without feeling guilty? God is looking for such men.

It's time to revisit your relationship with God (if you already have one). Revisit and see what sort it is... Whether it's up to standard.

Some of us here... our relationship with God cries for help. If we don't live for God, what is our gain? If I don't gain Him, I gain nothing!

At the level which Apostle Paul was, he wasn't satisfied. He still hungered and thirsted for more, and it was evident in his words:

"That I may know Him.. and the power of His resurrection.. "

How much more this generation of Christians? Greater is expected of us. To whom much is given much is expected.

May God revive in us that first love for Him. For those who don't have, may He plant the love for Him in their lives

Thank you Father for speaking to us through this vessel this night. Your word never returns without accomplishing its purpose. Father I know that you are already at work in the lives of these ones. Let your will alone & not our will be done in our lives. May all Glory, Honour & Adoration be ascribed to you, in the Name of your Son, Jesus Christ... Amen.

Amen.
