Do you know Jesus? Ofttimes people will give an instant 'Yes, He is the Son of God; the Messiah; my Lord and Saviour!' to this question. I consider these as facts. The reality is that there are more people who know about Jesus, than those who truly know Him. And there is a world of difference between the two.

The vast majority only know facts concerning Jesus Christ. Those who truly know Him are few. Knowing Jesus goes way deeper than head knowledge of the Word, what we've been taught at Sunday school classes or what we were asked to recite when we responded to alter call.

In this article we'll briefly explore what it means to know Jesus as He sheds light on His Word for us through the Holy Spirit.

Knowing Jesus entails the following:

1. ONE MUST BE CONNECTED TO THE HIM(THE VINE), TO RECEIVE PRUNING.

John 15:1-5 KJV
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. [2] Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. [3] Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. [4] Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. [5] I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

It is one thing for people to accept to be called Christians simply because they answered an alter call, it's another thing for them to truly accept Jesus Christ as their personal LORD and Saviour.

We're living an era where people intentionally respond to alter calls in the presence of thousands in a service but without sincerity in the heart, so as to use it as a yardstick to start a denomination and gain the acceptance of many.

The truth is that most of those preaching loud on pulpits today are neither truly saved nor leading their followers to Christ. These group of people are not connected to the Vine and their motive for being in ministry are always outside the LORD's will for His Church.

There are also those whom, for many years after saying they are born again have remained the same. True salvation dismantles our old lifestyle and gradually forms the life of Christ in us.

Everyone who is truly saved always immediately gets ushered into the refiner's fire for breaking, remoulding and reshaping, not ministry. Ministry comes after God has worked on us to His satisfaction.

If you’re currently in the refiner's fire, it means you have a relationship with Jesus Christ; you are connected to the Vine and you know Him.

2. ONE MUST BE DOER OF HIS WORD

This is where many arguments normally come in. We're not yet perfect but so long the LORD is working on us, He's gradually changing and enabling us to be doers of His Word. "No one is perfect" is not enough excuse for Christians to keep living and walking the opposite direction from what the Word of God says.

No one truly knows the LORD only for them to remain the same and can't put to practice anything written in His Word. Being connected to the Vine and receiving His pruning prepares us to be doers of His Word (as earlier stated). Obeying God and His Word naturally happens as He works on us to gradually change us into the likeness of His Son.

1 John 2:3-4 KJV
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. [4] He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

1 John 2:29 KJV
If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

3. ONE MUST BE ABLE TO HEAR HIS VOICE FOR THEMSELVES

The ability to hear God's voice is birthed within every truly saved soul at salvation. It may not be as sharp as that of mature Christians but it is there!  God speaks to everyone who is born of Him through dreams, His Word and many other ways.

If people who say they're Christians have a hard time hearing God for themselves after years of salvation, then something is definitely wrong somewhere. Jesus said that those who are His can hear His voice:

John 10:27 KJV
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

Just three points? Yes, but relevant, I believe! Are you connected to the Vine? Are you Harnessing Grace to be a doer of His Word? Can you hear His voice for yourself without chasing after Prophets?

If you’re lacking in any of these areas, the solution is to get back to the LORD and restructure your relationship with Him. He is waiting for you. Amen!
